We turn wastewater into clean water, renewable energy and nutrients.

Wastewater is our DNA: proprietary technologies built on decades of innovation, engineered in-house into treatment, recovery and reuse systems for clients globally.
Solutions

Wastewater Treatment
Tighter limits, rising energy costs, carbon targets. We design wastewater treatment that meets strict nitrogen, phosphorus and micropollutant limits while cutting sludge production, energy use, chemical demand and CO₂ emissions, so every plant, from city hall to factory floor, costs less to run for decades.

Resource Recovery
Sludge and organic waste are resources, not a disposal bill. We turn them into renewable energy, biomethane and fertiliser, recover nutrients for agriculture, shrink disposal volumes and help treatment plants move towards energy neutrality.

ZLD and Reuse
Where water is scarce, expensive or tightly permitted, the cheapest supply is already on site. We close the loop with water reuse and zero liquid discharge, returning process-grade water, recovering salts and metals, and taking discharge risk off the table.
Industries we serve

Municipal & Communal
Running a town's treatment plant against tighter nitrogen and phosphorus limits and a fixed budget? From first study to turnkey build, we upgrade plants to meet their limits, cut sludge disposal and recover biogas for energy. 440+ municipal plants delivered across 29 countries since 1964.
Applications
Nutrient removal
Deammonification
Biogas & bioCNG

All about UTB. Press play on our story, then scroll through the milestones that took us from a Swiss research lab to 660+ plants in 41 countries.

Research begins at Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, and ETH Zürich, laying the scientific foundations of UTB’s AEROTHERM™ process.
1978

Sunny Bhasin, a Purdue University engineering graduate, founds UTB Envirotec in Budapest.
1995

UTB opens its Budapest office, the base for more than three decades of process engineering. In 2026, UTB celebrates 30 years.
1996

COO György Taxner, a member of UTB's founding team and of IWA, the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers and the Hungarian Hydrological Society, receives the Lampl Hugó Award for engineering excellence.
2006

UTB opens its own laboratory, workshop and office campus, with a direct connection to a major municipal treatment plant for live pilot testing.
2010

Today, UTB’s European team is comprised of 77% engineers with 61% holding master’s degrees. 44% of our colleagues are women and we have a strong average tenure of 7.5 years.
